Raymond "Ray" W. Atkins, 82 of Oblong, Illinois died Tuesday, April 30, 2002 at 10:50 A.M. at Crawford Memorial Hospital, Robinson, Illinois. Ray was born on January 15, 1920 in Martinsville, Illinois and was the son of William and Marie (Thornburgh) Atkins. On February 15, l946 Ray married Alerta M. Hampsten, she survives. Ray was the Owner of Atkins Oil Company in Oblong for 29 years, he moved to Oblong from Martinsville in 1956. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Ray was a member of the First Christian Church of Oblong, Illinois where he served as a Deacon. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #219, Oblong and the V.F.W.. His Hobbies included gardening and farming.

Ray is survived by his wife, Alberta, 3 daughters and son-in-law: Judy & Rich Shoffstall, Cathy Mattingly and Kelly Atkins. 3 Grandchildren: Lora Shoffstall, Rick Shoffstall and Amy Mattingly. One sister: Wilma Jean Bowen of Casey, Illinois. Ray is preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Clifford Atkins.
